Kicking off the 2015 Bikini Series!

This year will be my FIFTH Tone It Up Bikini Series…wow. Just letting that sink in for a second. 

It’s been such an incredible journey to get to this place. From doing planks and lunges in our work hallway, to traveling to hang with K&K as their first Bikini Series winner, to getting married with some of my favorite girls by my side, to spending an amazing weekend in the California sunshine at the TIU Retreat, to starting our own local adventure right here in Charm City with BMOREtoned

This week kicks off an amazing eight Tone It Up Bikini Series program. I’ve tried to get myself as prepared as I can be…hitting the farmers market/grocery for healthy eats, stocking the fridge with prepped meals, lining up my journal/datebook and much more. I’m naturally inspired to join the series – I love the workouts, the new recipes and, of course, feeling healthier/more confident! BUT nothing could have inspired me more than the amazing women I met on Sunday at our BMOREtoned meetup! What an incredible morning – we worked out, we tried amazing treats, we shopped local and we made new friends! Such an inspiration!

Today, we’ve been challenged to write out our intentions and goals. First, I’m really hoping to spread the inspiration of fitness through BMOREtoned. I’m hoping to take on more classes – I teach Surfset now but I’m hoping start teaching Body Barre too! I want to stick to the meal plan too – the last time I really concentrated on eating well I honestly never felt better! I want to focus on being present in my everyday life. Lastly, I want to incorporate more yoga into my regular week!

If you’re not a TIU member, I definitely recommend checking them out! Karena and Katrina are two of the most amazing women I’ve ever met AND they’re not the only people you get when you join the team – you get all of us! All of us teammates who are here to support and love and struggle sometimes along with you! :)

Working at the National Aquarium has its perks sometimes…including this week when I got to meet our newest addition! Felize is our new baby sloth!

Felize was just born this Monday and is happily clinging to his momma Ivy. Luckily, I got to bring some local media up to see them today!

I’m going to FitBloggin’!

I have a super exciting announcement to make…I’m going to FitBloggin‘ this year!

FitBloggin’ is a conference for those who blog about fitness, wellness, good food and a healthy lifestyle. It’s an amazing event for fit-minded people regardless of where they are in their journey. We all come together & share a passion to live a happy, healthy balanced life!

I attended FitBloggin’ a few years ago when it was here in Baltimore and it was amazing! I met so many incredible and inspiring people. I learned a TON about blogging and my fitness community. I ate some delicious food & gathered some new recipes. And, of course, I worked up a sweat doing some fun new workouts!

This year, when the FitBloggin crew had a call for social assistants, I jumped at the chance to join the fun again! While I’m at the conference, I’ll be assigned to different sessions to cover. I’ll be working to capture the essence and lessons from each session to help those who can’t join

This weeks marks the 100 days mark and I’m getting so jazzed! Can’t wait!

How much sleep should you be getting?

I’m thrilled to share a new article I wrote for the BurnThis blog! BurnThis is a new fitness and healthy lifestyle community with an app that’s kind of like a Pinterest/Instagram feed JUST for fitness. Obviously, I love it. haha As one of their BurnThis Ambassadors, I’ve found it’s an awesome place to spread give (and get) inspiration! Besides their awesome app, they also have a blog filled with all kinds of helpful articles. Sometimes they feature pieces by their ambassadors and voila! I just got this one posted!

Do you know how much sleep you should be getting? The National Sleep Foundation recently announced updated recommendations for sleep duration.

We all need sleep. NEED. Don’t try to claim you’re fine with a few hours or that you can rock regular all-nighters. Sooner or later it catches up with you because (it’s been proven) we NEED sleep. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than 35 percent of people are sleep deprived! Not cool.

Did you know that sleep also affects your weight? Turns out, sleep deprivation is a little like being drunk. You don’t have the mental clarity to make smart, complex decisions – specifically around the foods you eat…and foods you want to avoid (Shape Magazine).

In today’s constantly moving, everything-needs-to-be-done-right-now world, it’s difficult to make time for sleep. When we start to understand how incredibly important sleep is to your body, health, strength and overall wellbeing, it becomes undeniably obvious…the better we’re able to sleep, the better we’re able to live.

Here are some tips to hopefully help you get a few more zzz’s:

  • Practice a bedtime ritual like yoga or reading!
  • Set a sleep schedule.
  • Remove as many sounds and lights as you can from your bedroom.
  • Try to have your last meal at least two hours before you go to bed.
  • Turn off your phone 30 minutes earlier to relax your mind.
  • Research more tips.
  • Prioritize sleep!

Burn Calories to Give Calories

So excited for the fun new campaign Fitbit has launched with Feeding America called FitForFood!

fitbit fitforfood It’s a great idea. Basically, you track as you would normally through your Fitbit tracker. When you burn calories, they donate to those in need across America! The overall goal is to burn 1 billion calories – it’s a great motivation! With all those burning calories (and Feeding America of course), Fitbit is hoping to provide 1.5 million meals to families, seniors and children!

Since joining a few days ago, I’ve burned more than 1,800 active calories and that translates to 2 meals donated! But that’s just my little contribution…there’s been more than 370,000,000 active calories burned in the challenge so far! Which means more than 530,000 meals donated! So exciting! Let’s go go go!
